When it comes to Chicano Theatre in the United States, the play, Zoot Suit exhibits themes seen in El Teatro Campesino. It was the first Chicano play to be shown on Broadway. The play showed the racial tension that was there between the Caucasian and Latino community during the early 1940s. El Teatro Campensino itself actually means the "Farm Worker's Theatre." The play was one of many that went on to highlight problems posed on the Mexican American by the Anglo society. These problems that included discrimination in jobs and housing as well. During this time, Luis Valdez exhibited through his plays these issues society needed to see. Zoot Suit was able to illustrate the issue of racism in society through recreating the case of Sleepy Lagoon and capturing different personalities and real life events.
